Description:

The main focus of this course is responding to environments and recording your personal responses through creative writing, though it would equally appeal to visual artists wishing to pursue a new approach to keeping sketch books and commonplace books. The course is activity-based with various exercises and techniques you will be able to sample and take away with you. There will also be some talks and examples presented for discussion. The course is led by an author and artist who is also an experienced teacher.

19.30  Course Introduction, Outline of Objectives, Short talk to give a contextual backdrop: A Sense of Place - hauntology and psycho-geography in art and literature.

SATURDAY
08.15   Breakfast
09.30   Task 1 including a guided creative walk around the Plas, gardens and woodlands (weather permitting).
11.15   Task 2 exercises and individual responses to chosen locations in and around the Plas
12.30   Lunch
13.30   Task 3 developing your Sense of Place, including one-to-one tutorials
16.00   Task 4 individual activities
17:00   Table-top ‘exhibition’ of work, comments and critique
18.00   Bar
18.30   Dinner
19.30   Talk about transmedia approaches – using one creative format to improve acts of looking and ways of engaging with places (and people) from fresh perspectives. How individual responses may be recorded in different ways and then used creatively.

SUNDAY

09:30   Task 4 – introducing the ‘BBC story circle’
11.15   Task 5 a repertoire of short activities and stimuli for further responses to locations beyond the course setting
12:00   Review and ‘homework’ for those interested in more long-form responses using what you have learned
