Prepare for the Challenge…..NOW!

12 February 2016

Snowdonia National Park Wardens are encouraging walkers and organizers of the Three Peaks Challenge to register for the Challenge now!

Every year, between 30 and 40,000 people attempt to reach the peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon whilst trying to complete the Three Peaks Challenge. Unfortunately, this contributes towards the erosion of paths, lost habitats, parking problems for walkers, tourists and residents together with unwanted rubbish being left behind on the mountains. But with plenty of careful preparation and planning, along with educating participants, those who protect the mountains are confident that impact can be reduced.

In an effort to minimize the negative impact of the Challenge and encourage responsible and sustainable use of the mountains, the Three Peaks Partnership and the Partnership’s website which was launched last year, is packed with practical advice on how to complete the challenge. Snowdonia National Park Senior Warden, Helen Pye explains further.

"The website is aimed at anyone who is preparing to complete the Three Peaks Challenge, whether a keen walker or organizer. By registering now, it will give people plenty of time to plan and prepare for their Challenge. We're asking people to do three things:

  • When registering, decide on a date and bear in mind that certain periods are busier than others. To appreciate and enjoy these stunning mountains, try to complete the challenge in three days if possible rather than the traditional 24 hours.
  • Plan your route carefully. The website provides detailed information about each mountain, including how to prepare; parking and drop-offs; how to reduce your impact on these mountains, along with downloadable guidance and advice from local experts.
  • Read the experts’ advice on the type of equipment and clothing that will be needed and how to stay safe.

So the sooner you register and plan, the better your experience will be and you, the mountain and the surrounding area will benefit.”

The Partnership’s website is www.threepeakspartnership.co.uk  and registration is free.
